Magnum are a progressive rock band, formed in 1972 by Tony Clarkin (guitar) and Bob
Catley (vocals) in Birmingham, England. They rose to prominence during the height
of the NWOBHM era in the 1980s and survived both the years and the changing musical
scene. By 1994 they had released 11 studio albums before an eight year break, to be
followed by six more. In 1988 they had three top 40 UK singles.
Their early early line-up included Colin Lowe (bass) for 20 years and Mark Stanway
(keyboards) who joined in 1976 and has been almost everpresent until 2017. Former
Thunder drummer Harry James joined in 2001 although has also had duties with other
bands, requiring occasional alternative dummers in his place.
